Scrambles
Monthly Scrambles (aka selective shot) are "friendly" low pressure team enjoyable competitions. This team event gives each player the advantage of making their shot from the most advantageous spot of their foursome's shots from tee to holing out and thus reduces the pressures of making a good shot.
The scrambles are typically played on either the last Wednesday (@ Waterford) or Thursday (@ Edgewater) of each month and is managed by Mike Tracey. Mike assembles teams based on self reported Good Score in Perfect Condition (GSiPC) handicaps so that teams are similar in overall ability. Mike shuffles the players for each event so that people meet and play with different players each month. To sign up for each scramble, be watching for the usual Evites via email and respond quickly to get in on the action.
Scramble Rules
Scramble Rules - Updated 9/9/2024
-
A scramble means that all team members tee off on each hole and then the captain will decide which tee shot will be used by marking the spot with a tee or ball marker.
-
The other team members pick up their balls and place them within one club length (no closer to the hole) of the marked spot. Each team member hits their next shot from the chosen spot of the prior shot.
-
If the ball you choose to play is in a hazard (water, etc.), the rough, or out of bounds, you cannot drop the ball outside of the hazard or rough even if relief is within one club length away. Ball in the sand traps will have to be played out of the sand.
-
This procedure is followed on every shot for the remainder of the hole, including putts. The ball should be marked on the putting green also.
-
Putts need to be made within 3 inches of the marked spot (no closer to the hole). The first ball to go in the hole is counted for the team score. When putting, once any ball is holed out, no further strokes count. The team is cautioned not to make “tap” in putts until all team members have had the opportunity to attempt the team’s original putt.
-
Putts within one foot of the hole shall be conceded as “good” for pace of play.
-
There will no longer be a requirement to use tee shots for each player
-
Tee Boxes -
-
Players who are classified as Short (S) or Medium (M) hitters can play from the forward tees. (These are typically but not necessary the Red Tees)
-
All other Players Long (L) or Extra (XL) hitters) will play from the 2nd most forward tees. (These are typically but not necessary the White Tees)
-
No Mulligans are allowed.
-
To speed play, the maximum score is Bogey. If you have reached a score of Par, but not yet sunk the putt – Pick-up and take a Bogey.
-
In the event of a tie in score, the lowest handicap hole (starting with #1 handicap) will be used to determine the team recording the lowest score on that hole will be declared the winner. In the event the score is still tied, a progression to the next lowest handicap hole (#2) will begin until the tie is broken. For example, at Edgewater, Hole # 18 is the lowest (1) handicap hole while Hole #2 is the 2nd lowest handicap hole.
-
If a team is short a player before the start of Play, I will move one player from another team to make 2 or more threesomes while still trying to maintain the overall competitiveness of all teams.
-
Teams with 3 players will take the turn of the missing player on 6 of the 18 holes. The Captain will choose what hole each player will play and that player will take all shots for that hole.
-
If a player needs to take a break from play and skip some holes, the remaining players will rotate playing that person’s shot until the player returns. Once the rotation is established, it must be maintained for the rest of the round.
-
Captains must return the team’s final scorecard to Scramble Coordinator as soon as possible after completing the round to be official. Prizes will be determined and handed out at the after round social.

Tree Tops Men’s Golf Scramble March 2025 Results
This year’s 1st scramble got off to a great start as a record number of 58 players joined us at Edgewater. A total of 63 players signed up and a few players were initially placed on the waitlist. We were however able to assign them to a team due to some last minute cancellation. While we will try to fit everyone, additional tee times are not always available for us to do so. It is therefore important to respond (and confirm doing so) to the Evite as quickly as possible to secure your spot.
Congratulations to the winners of the scramble:
· Team Benoit (Shane Benoit, Connie Teetz, Bernie Gross, David Mundy) edged out Team Camut and Bromley in the tie breaker to capture 1st place as each team posted an 11 under par score of 61.
· Team Camut (Ken Camut, Glenn Schwartzkopf, Mike Sloop, Chris Ware,) took 2nd place in the tie breaker.
· Team Bromley (David Bromley, John Gakeler, Mark Mikeal,) took 3rd place in the tie breaker.
· Team Morrow (Barry Morrow, Mike Tracey, Bill Lins) took 4th place with a 10 underscore of 62.
Winners of the closest to the pin contests were:
o Hole #4 – Mike Reddy
o Hole #8 – Jim Dott
o Hole #11 – Ken Camut
o Hole #15 – Tom Barger
Our next scramble is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday April 30, 2025 at Waterford.
As an administrative matter, 11 golfers did not respond to the Evite. While I understand this occasionally happening, continual “No Replies” will result in your removal from the Evite mailing list.

May 2024 Scramble Results
May’s monthly scramble rotated back to Edgewater GC with 47 participants. Great weather and excellent course conditions resulted in all teams scoring well below par. And a new wrinkle to the tees from which we hit our drives aided in the lower scores. All short and medium drivers of the ball played ALL holes from the most forward tees, and all long and extra long drivers played from the next back white tees.
The winning team this month with 12 under par was captained by Mike Bruno and members Lou Molnar, Bill Vance and Jim MacIver. Also at 12 under par was Dave Bromley’s team of Dick Smith, Bernie Gross and Bob Bezuk. The tie was broken with a match of cards. Mike Bruno’s team birdied the #1 handicap hole, number 18 at Edgewater, with an aggressive putt from Lou Molnar from the front fringe to a red flag. The putt rattled the flag stick and dove into the bottom of the cup resulting in the win. The Bromley team placed second.
Third place went, in a match of three cards, to Ken Camut’s team of Glenn Schwartzkopf, Lou Vargochik and Mike Reddy at 10 under par. Two other teams also tied at 10 under par: captain Alan Welch, Bill Linnane, Dennis Lloyd and Chris Ware; and the team of captain Mike Eckholm, Mike Tutino, Fred Kellisch, and Bill Fazio..
Closest to pin contests on the par threes were won by:
- Dave Bromley (on #4),
- Bill Fazio (#8),
- MartinChevalier (#11), and
- C.W. Saari (#15).
Note, three of the four winners are short and medium hitters who took advantage of forward tees.
The next scramble is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26 at WATERFORD GC.
Posted and hosted by Jim MacIver while Mike Tracey was vacationing overseas.

March 2024 Results
The weather forecast and course conditions for Thursday’s scramble was certainly iffy after Wednesday’s rain but the early morning clouds gave way to warming and partly sunny skies by the time we hit the back 9. Thirty eight (38) players braved the Cart Path Only conditions and the course was in pretty good shape. A special shout out to Bill Vance who normally doesn’t play in these conditions stuck it out. I think everyone enjoyed playing in teams of 3 and moving up to the front tees.
Also a special shout out to Anthony Gionta for arranging our lunch at Smokn’ Rail. I think everyone was impressed with the food, drinks and atmosphere. Definitely a place to go back to for future events.
Congratulations to the winners of the scramble:
-
Team Smith (Andrew Smith, Dennis Kelly, Lou Vargochik, John McCarter) captured 1st place by posting a 8 under par score of 64
-
Team Bruno (Mike Bruno, Mike Crist, Lou Molnar) held off Teams Leveille and Welch for 2nd place with all 3 teams posting a 6 under par score of 66
